Traveling in Spain

While we were in Orgiva, we also visited the close by city of Granda. Granda had a wonderful and rich culture with a very nice mixture of people of different faiths. It was great to hear people in Granada talk about Muslims and Christians and feeling proud of how much their culture is mixed from Muslim and Christian invaders. Even the architecture of the buildings here is rich in both Muslim and Christian influence. We spent a day in the city and we also did a walking tour where the guides explained a lot about the city and its history. Alhambra was a very nice fort worth visiting. We had wonderful food and walked around the city for a few hours.

After a wonderful WWOOFing experience in Orgiva, we spent the next few weeks traveling around Spain - we went to Almeria, Murcia, Valencia, and Barcelona. We spent a few relaxing days in Almeria going to the Fort and cooking fresh fish in a very nice Airbnb apartment we stayed in. We passed through Murcia just for a day, but from our brief visit it seemed like a busy city. After that we spent a week in Valencia, which we really enjoyed. Valencia seemed like a very open and well planned city. It definitely had the look of a big city, but the Turia Riverbed Park, which stretches seven kilometres through the city, made the landscape of the city very beautiful. People there seemed very nice and open. We saw a lot of female-couples and male-couples holding hands, and talking to locals it seems like homosexual couples are as free to express their love on the streets as heterosexual couples. One of Sam's friends from his travels, Juan Whist who is from Valencia gave us a city tour and it was nice to hear about Spain, about local and national politics, and culture from a local. Catalonia was about to take the vote on their independence in a week's time and it was interesting to hear inside scoop about the issue.

After Valencia, we spent a few days in Barcelona. As both of us visited Barcelona in the past, our main focus was to visit La Sagrada Familia and take some rest before taking the flight to Portugal. La Sagrada Familia was a marvellous piece of architecture with each part of the church covered with art and rich sculpting. We had a wonderful time there and we also enjoying spending some time inside the church sitting in peace.

Next stop, Portugal!!
